Apparently Rinspeed developed this vehicle long before their sQuba car, but it's just making its rounds on the internet, so here it is. The Splash is a little sports car (0-60 in 5.9) that, with the push of a button, turns into a little hydrofoil boat capable of 45 knots (~52 mph). It's powered by natural gas and there's no word on price or if they're even available. I really admire Rinspeed for their multipurpose vehicles, but it seems they can't think outside the land/water box. Try this one on for size Rinspeed - the Blastoff. It's a car and a rocketship. You can drive it to work or the freaking moon. It's got wheels and an engine like a car, but it also has hyper-thrusters and all that space technology stuff too. Yeah, and it's modeled after an old El Camino. Is that specific enough to secure a patent? I don't want anybody stealing my idea.

MG car show at the Vanderbilt Museum

One car you will not find on the "Top Cars for Older Drivers" list is the MG, because many boomers and seniors who are still into sports cars would have a hard time getting out of the tiny two-seaters.

But, there's no harm in looking.

The MG's peak of popularity in the United States was in the '60s and early '70s, when, in the wake of The Beatles and James Bond, all things British were seen as hip and stylish.

To see a collection of MGs, head over to the Vanderbilt Museum Sunday, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. for the MG car show.

For fans of fancier British roadsters, the Vanderbilt is presenting a Jaguar car show on Sept. 13.

And all-American muscle will be on display Oct. 4 when the annual Corvette show rolls onto the Vanderbilt's grounds.

The museum admission of $7 for adults, $6 for seniors 62 and older includes access to the estate grounds and the car shows. For more information, call 631-854-5555.

Bond’s couch

The guys at Aston Martin Heritage Design, who typically create custom parts for the famous British cars, used their craftsmanship on something more unusual: a couch shaped as a DB6 rear end. It’s all handmade and would probably please hard-core Bond fans (we’ll pass, thank you). To be precise, even though the DB6 was visually similar to the DB5, only the latter was used in 007’s movies.
The couch could be yours for $7,600, without the headrests or the ejection seat.

They also propose a V12 and a V8 Engine lounge table.

the BMW Z8

In the 1999 film The World Is Not Enough, James Bond piloted this bad little Beemer before it was officially produced by BMW. Apparently, those are the kind of perks that accompany a license to kill. During filming, the crew actually used a series of working mock-ups of the Z8 that vary a bit from the official production car. After the first model rolled out of the factory, all 5,703 of the original BMW Z8’s sold out, going for a starting price of $128,000.

James Bond crashes yet another Aston Martin

Once again, a DBS met its maker on a James Bond shooting. Following the several ones destroyed during the rollover scene in Casino Royale and the one which wasn’t supposed to take a fatal bath in the Lake Garda on the set of Quantum of Solace, the much desired vehicle hit a stone wall in a quarry for what will be the climax of the chase in the upcoming movie.
For good measure, the bad guy’s vehicle is also destroyed in the scene, which MI6 describes as follow:

Bond is chased by villains in Alfa Romeos around the banks of Lake Garda, culminating in a devastating crash in the Canalgrande and Fantiscritti marble quarries. The action will form the pre-credits sequence to the movie and is expected to run for 15 minutes.

Sounds like a hell of thrill ride to start a movie and we can’t wait to see it. At the same time, we’re sad about the car, but we console ourselves by thinking (hoping?) that most of the good stuff (engine, interior…) had been taken out.
